FAQs

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a Dental Specialty that focuses on treatment of dental and facial irregularities and abnormalities. An Orthodontist receives addtional education, training and experience to straighten teeth, correct bites and misaligned jaw structures which can lead to other issues like TMJ.

When is the best time to see an Orthodontist?

Patients can start treatment at any age, however typically the best time to be evaluated is at age 7. When early orthodontic intervention is recommended, it is to treat and correct things like jaw disproportions before aligning the teeth, manage crowding, eliminate damaging habits etc..  Early removal of selected teeth may be necessary to guide the eruption of permanent teeth. These extractions prevent a variety of problems such as impacted or unfavorable positioned permanent teeth, damage to the roots of permanent teeth, severe crowding of permanent teeth. Timely treatment will provide advantages that are not available later, and it's usually cheaper in the long run.

How long do you have to wear braces?

Every patient is different therefore, the treatment times will vary from patient to patient.  Treatment times can be from 6 to 24+ months depending on the severity of the case.  The average length is about 20 to 24 months. If early treatment was recommended and done, there is the possibiltiy of additional treatment, but because of the early intervention the amount of time needed for full comprehensive braces is shortened, and in some cases eliminated the need for braces completely.

Do Braces hurt?

Braces can cause minor discomfort and irritation which can be treated with over the counter pain medicines like Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Aleve. The irritation can be treated with topical numbing ointments, that are also available over the counter.

Do I still need to get Dental checkups?

Continue to get your regular dental checkups every 6 months. Food can get caught in places your toothbrush can't reach. These regular appointments will help your teeth remain clean.

Will braces interfere with extra curricular activities?

Braces will not stop you from participating in activities, however you may have to adjust to them. For some of the more physical activities we recommend you wear a mouthguard, which you can get from your Orthodontist.

Benefits of timely treatment include:

Improving your smile/self confidence, growth of jaws in a positive manner, improve width of dental arches, reduce the need to extract permanent teeth, correct harmful oral habits, improve speech development, reduce potential damage to jaw joints, etc...
